Waffle House adds 50 cent egg surcharge as prices soar amid bird flu crisis

Waffle House temporarily puts surcharge on eggs due to rising costs

NORCROSS, Ga. — Waffle House is implementing a temporary surcharge that’ll cost diners 50 cent per egg, the Georgia-based restaurant chain announced Monday. The breakfast giant popular for its low prices said the price hike is the result of bird flu.

“The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (Bird Flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices,” a Waffle House news release states. “Consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.

“Effective February 3, Waffle House has implemented a temporary .50 per egg surcharge to all menus,” the news release states.

Waffle House, which operates more than 2,000 locations in 25 states, said it’s unsure how long the surcharge will last. “While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the news release states.

Prices for eggs continue to surge worldwide as does the bird flu. It has spread to dozens of mammalian species and even caused the death of a person in Louisiana this year - the first human case in the U.S.

The price for a large carton of eggs increased 39 cents, to $7.63 per dozen in the week ending on Jan. 31, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
