The officers, who were not identified, were shot while responding around 9:40 a.m. to a report of a domestic dispute near the south side of the Griffen Bell Golf Course, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The shooting prompted a lock down at Georgia Southwestern State University. School officials ordered students to shelter in place.

Authorities with GBI confirmed that an Americus police officer died in the shooting.

Another officer, with the Georgia Southwestern State University public safety department, was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, officials said.

No students were injured.

The suspect remains at large. He was identified by police as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32, and is considered armed and dangerous, according to GBI investigators.

Students are urged to continue to shelter in place.

"Students, faculty and staff should remain in their present location until further notice," school officials said in an emergency alert. "Please secure all doors and windows (any additional actions such as shut down HVAC, turn off lights, move to unobservable part of the room, get on the floor, away from doors) and await further instructions or contact by first responders."

The university is in Americus, about 130 miles south of Atlanta.
