‘You’re responsible for putting in the right thing’: Jax curbside recycling returns Monday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After six months, curbside recycling pickup in Jacksonville is making a comeback and is returning Monday.

The city suspended curbside recycling pickup on Oct. 4, citing national labor shortages. The 15 centralized recycling drop-off sites just closed on Thursday.

Recycling will be collected every other week.

Our Action News Jax newsroom has received all types of calls and emails from people wondering how this will all play out come Monday, and some of them are skeptical of a smooth return to curbside recycling and some hopeful service will resume without many hitches.

“I’m looking forward to it,” resident Denise Dreyer said. “We’ve already started recycling. Our bin is full and ready.”

While many say they miss the convenience, some have concerns about paying for a service they weren’t receiving for months.

Action News Jax told you in February that taxpayers pay about $150 a year for the service.

Jacksonville resident Dempsey Revels was walking his dog at Castaway Island Preserve on Sunday, which was one of the city’s 15 recycling drop-off sites. He shared his thoughts.

“When they had the dumpsters out here, people were bringing everything and piling in,” Revels said. “It wasn’t soothing to look at it. I’m very excited that it’s coming back to curbside.”

Richard Devitt said curbside or not, you need to do your part.

“You’re lucky to have single stream-recycling,” Devitt said. “You’re responsible for putting in the right thing. I have every reason to believe it’ll go well.”

CURBSIDE RECYCLING PICK-UP RULES:

1. Use a city-issued recycling cart with a yellow lid.

2. Place the cart 3 feet apart from bulk items or garbage and away from obstructions, with the wheels facing away from the road.

3. The cart’s lid must be fully closed. Save excess recycling for the next recycling collection day.

4. Ensure items are empty and free from residue.

5. Do not put recycling in plastic bags!

6. Glass can still be recycled.
