What you need to know about fireworks safety ahead of New Year’s Eve

It’s almost time to ring in the new year, and that means thinking about safety first when it comes to fireworks.

First responders have some reminders for those putting on their own fireworks displays. In Florida and Georgia, it is legal to use fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

When you light them, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said do not stand over them and make sure your display is away from other houses.

“I’ve seen them go into tops of houses that have brush on top of them catch them on fire,” JFRD Captain Eric Prosswimmer said. “I’ve seen them go in trees right next to house, catch them on fire.”

JFRD said it’s best to build a barrier to keep everyone at a safe distance.

And if you have kids around, its imperative to keep a close eye on them.

“You got to worry about kids and fireworks,” Prosswimmer said. “They are drawn to them, and they don’t know how to react to them. Sparklers, are one of the most dangerous things they can have.”

Kristen Elkins is one of many who will be counting down to 2025 and celebrating with family and friends. She purchased fireworks Monday with the safety of her 2-year-old daughter on top of her mind.

“Just making sure that the kids stay back and let the husbands do it if they decide to do anything bigger,” Elkins said.

Once you’re done with all the fun, you’ll want to make sure you dispose of them properly.

“We would suggest you have a bucket of water,” Prosswimmer said. “Soak them in water before you throw them away.”
