Buckman Bridge southbound lanes reopen after deadly crash | FIRST ALERT TRAFFIC

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Buckman Bridge’s southbound lanes were closed for hours Monday morning as authorities responded to a deadly crash.

UPDATE, 1 PM: Southbound lanes of the Buckman Bridge have reopened, FL511 traffic cameras show.

UPDATE, 11 AM: The driver of a pickup truck traveling southbound on Interstate 295 on the Buckman Bridge ran into the back of a disabled box truck that was in the left emergency lane, according to an FHP news release.

“For reasons still under investigation, [the pickup] entered into the left emergency lane causing the left front of [the pickup] to strike the right rear of [the box truck], an FHP news release states.

The 28-year-old man who was driving the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 43-year-old driver of the box truck was not injured. The passenger in box truck, a 27-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.

All southbound lanes remain closed.


UPDATE, 9:27 AM: All southbound lanes on the Buckman Bridge remain closed Monday morning.

US 17 and SR 21 are the detour routes, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Green Cove Springs authorities are announcing major delays on the Shands Bridge because of the detours.

UPDATE, 7:10 AM: Interstate 295 southbound on the Buckman Bridge is down to three lanes after a fatal crash involving two vehicles, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Traffic is being diverted off the interstate. “Expect extensive traffic delays,” FHP said.

UPDATE, 6:53 AM: Jacksonville police said they’re closing the southbound lanes of the Buckman Bridge Monday morning due to the fatal accident.
