Teen arrested after 3-year-old shot himself in hand with gun teen left sitting out, police say

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — A teen was arrested Wednesday after Glynn County police say a 3-year-old shot himself with a gun the teen left sitting out.

The incident happened in December when officers responded to a call where the 3-year-old boy shot himself in the hand.

Detectives conducted interviews and found that the 17-year-old “had left the handgun unattended and within reach of the minor,” according to a news release from the Glynn County Police Department.

The 17-year-old also “unlawfully possessed the handgun,” GCPD said.

Officers spotted the teen at a business in the 3000 block of Altama Avenue and he tried to run away, “but was apprehended shortly thereafter without incident,” the release said.

While he was running away, he threw a handgun onto a roof, which Glynn County Fire/Rescue was able to retrieve, GCPD said.

The teen is now facing charges of:

  • Second-degree cruelty to children
  • Reckless conduct
  • Possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18
  • Obstruction of peace officers during the discharge of their lawful duties
