Report: Man beaten to death on the Westside left with handwritten note on his chest

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — This article has been updated to reflect a less redacted report obtained by Action News Jax.

A report reveals that a man the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says was beaten to death on the Westside last week was discovered with a note on his chest written with a green highlighter: “PEDO Touches Children.”

Later that day, 21-year-old Journee McGrew was arrested for 2nd-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

The victim, 41-year-old Waduta Woodley, was discovered at the Cross Creek Apartment complex off of Manatok Avenue on July 2.

McGrew’s arrest report, which was made public on Monday, states that when officers arrived at 3:48 in the morning, they found Woodley lying in a large pool of blood in front of an apartment, suffering from blunt force trauma to the head and face.

The report says a metal hammer was collected from the bathroom sink.

Action News Jax looked into Woodley’s criminal history and found he’s never faced any charges related to child sex crimes.

According to the arrest report, McGrew told police after Woodley’s death that he had been sexually grooming her since she was eight years old and sexually battered her multiple times.

In an interview with police, McGrew said she invited the victim to the apartment that night to hang out and have sex. “McGrew began messaging Woodley, stating that she had been fantasizing about him sexually and regretted ever treating him poorly,” the report stated.

McGrew told police that after rejecting sexual advances by Woodley, she asked him to leave and escorted him to the door - but not before grabbing a hammer from her closet. When he turned around and put his arms around her, she reportedly pushed him away.

The rest of the attack is redacted from the report.
