Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief Allen Parker said an officer was following up on a traffic stop they conducted last week.
The officer was familiar with the suspect, 29-year-old Michael Youmans, Parker said.
Sgt. Ben Mcewan, who was with the officer, followed Youmans, who backed his car up to a fence.

Mcewan asked Youmans to put his hands up, and Youmans reversed his car back a few feet.
Parker said Mcewan asked Youmans to stop the car, and Mcewan then fired shots after Youmans began to accelerate toward him.
Youmans came out of the car, crawling and “asking for a cigarette,” Parker said.

Youmans’ criminal history includes charges of theft, drug possession, resisting arrest with and without violence, fleeing and eluding, burglary, and trespassing.
Mcewan has been with JSO for 11 years and this is his first officer-involved shooting.
