Sheriff Phillips told Action News Jax the single-engine plane is believed to have gone off the runway while attempting to land at Davis Field shortly before 4:15 P.M.
The left wing of the plane hit a tree and broke off during the crash.
“As passengers exited, a fire broke out at the plane’s front. Ga Forestry employees quickly responded and put out the fire. Hill area residents assisted passengers,” said Sheriff Phillips. “Charlton Co. EMS and Firefighters rapidly arrived, extracting an occupant needing assistance.”
All four adults were taken to a hospital in Jacksonville for treatment, with two of them being airlifted. Charlton County Fire Chief C.L. Lewis said the children were also transported out of precaution.
Sheriff Phillips said two men, who had been in the front, were left with serious injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be taking over the investigation to figure out what lead up to the crash.
The Sheriff told Action News Jax that the Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB will be at the site of the crash to investigate on Friday morning.
