33-year-old woman hit, killed in Blanding Blvd. Crosswalk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a 33-year-old woman after being hit by a car at the intersection of Blanding Boulevard and Parkwood Drive Saturday morning.

Troopers say the car had a steady green light when the woman walked into its path in the crosswalk; this is far from the first time Blanding has seen a deadly crash though.

“I’m really sad to hear that because I see a lot of regular people who walk here,” Loretta Webster said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the woman was walking in the crosswalk and said the car that hit her had a steady green light when she walked into its path. Loretta Webster works at a local market stand right at the intersection where it happened and says there are crashes around here often.

“Once every week or two, a lot of near misses and a lot of horn blaring,” she said.

Blanding Boulevard stretches through both Clay and Duval counties, and several law enforcement agencies respond to crashes along Blanding Boulevard.

In June, Action News Jax told you a report from JSO said they responded to roughly 600 crashes on the road in the past two years. In 2021, three of the four most crashes they responded to were all along different intersections of Blanding Boulevard.

In October, we told you about a woman who was hit at Blanding and Belmont and was seriously hurt.

For Webster, she says the intersection can be scary.

“Drivers and pedestrians, it’s really scary, sometimes you have to wait a long time for this light to change,” she said. “The drivers are probably just as bad too though, they go flying through here.”

Troopers say the driver that hit the 33-year-old had two children in the car, but nobody in the car was hurt.
