ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A 45-year-old man is dead after he was shot by St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday morning.
The suspect, identified as Bradd Sweeny, can be seen holding a gun in body camera video released Wednesday evening.
The sheriff’s office said the deputies were called to the area of 1st Street and Brainard Road in South St. Augustine at approximately 5:40 am by a resident reporting a suspicious person in her yard.
The woman reported that she believed the man was a neighbor she had an encounter with the day before, the sheriff’s office said during a Wednesday morning news conference. The deputies arrived minutes later and confronted the man, according to the sheriff’s office.

The initial encounter leading up to the shooting was captured by surveillance and body cameras.
After multiple orders, Sweeny put down the weapon. However, he is then seen quickly reaching back down and briefly picking it up before being shot. A deputy is then seen checking the gun, which he confirmed was loaded.
Despite medical aid, Sweeny died on scene. SJSO said Sweeny had been in multiple altercations with neighbors over the previous several months.
Both deputies involved have been identified and placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
