Man sentenced to 12 years for killing Creekside High School graduate in wrong-way crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The man who killed an 18-year-old Creekside High School graduate in a wrong-way crash in May 2023 is going to prison.

After hours of emotional victim impact statements before the court Friday, a judge sentenced Ariel Monteagudo to 12 years in prison, 100 hours of community service, and ordered him to pay more than $25,000 in restitution.

Monteagudo pleaded guilty in November 2024 to killing Trenton Stewart, who was a football player at Stetson University.

Stewart was driving eastbound on Old St. Augustine Road at about 1 a.m. on May 9. 2023. He was driving home for summer break after finishing his first year at Stetson University, his family said.

Monteagudo, 40, was driving over 100 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone in the wrong direction of traffic, police said. He crashed head-on into Stewart’s vehicle.

The judge will also get a written order to permanently suspend Monteagudo’s driver’s license.

Monteagudo previously spent 10 years in prison, between 2002 and 2012, after being convicted of a separate vehicular homicide in Broward County.
