Local civil rights advocates eagerly await completion of recommended site for Florida Museum of Black History

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — St Augustine is one of Florida’s most historic cities and one that was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

“Dr. [Martin Luther] King’s campaign here in St. Augustine was publicized around the world, it’s the most famous event in modern history that happened here,” St Augustine civil rights historian David Nolan explained on Monday.

That’s why back in June Governor Ron DeSantis, appointed Florida Museum of Black History Task Force made its final recommendation for the museum to be placed in West Augustine. After that recommendation, all that was left was approval from the governor and state legislature.

There’s been no action during the interim. However, the full legislature has not met since the decision came down. Legislators are set to return to Tallahassee for their regular session on Mar. 4.

Despite the lack of action on the recommendation to date, David Nolan with ACCORD Freedom Trail, a St. Augustine civil rights historical organization, told Action News he’s confident the landmark will still make its way to one of Florida’s most historic cities.

“I remember Martin Luther King used to say that ‘the moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards justice.’ So, if it’s delayed, I still think we’ll get there in the end,” said Nolan.

A member of the West Augustine Steering Committee told Action News Jax Monday more clarification is expected in the next few weeks on state funding for the project. Nolan explained the project will generate significant dividends for the West Augustine community.

“It will help the economy of that area, and it’s been an area that’s always been left over,” Nolan said.
