JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Colonel David Scott, who is forever linked to NASA’s “Apollo” missions to the moon and has worked with Neil Armstrong, was honored by Jacksonville University leaders on Tuesday afternoon as the recipient of the 2023 Presidential Global Citizen Award.

With over 500 hours in space, Colonel Scott is also just one of three men in human history to perform both orbital missions and missions to the moon.

Furthermore, Colonel Scott hasn’t just been to the moon, he also was the first man to ever drive a lunar rover on the moon, as part of his mission on Apollo 15.

“What is it like on the moon? I don’t know what it’s like, but I know how I felt. It was a great adventure for me,” Colonel Scott reminisced at Tuesday’s ceremony.

Additionally, Colonel Scott found a lunar crust older than life itself.

“The press called it ‘the Genesis Rock.’ 4.2 billion years old and it was apparently part of the original lunar crust,” Colonel Scott says.

That piece of rock would go on to provide invaluable insights into the formation of the moon and Earth themselves.

Although the Apollo missions ended nearly half a century ago, Colonel Scott’s legacy will continue to live on among the stars.

“It’s a vast universe. It’s so far out you can hardly tell,” Colonel Scott said with a smile across his face.

Now, exploration of the moon continues to live on through NASA’s “Artemis” program.
