JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan announced Wednesday that she will not sign, nor will she veto, an immigration bill passed by the City Council last week.
She was surrounded by a dozen faith and immigrant leaders as she made the announcement.

The bill makes it a crime to be in Duval County without legal status in the country.
It also provides funds to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for fingerprint scanners to determine suspects’ immigration status and requires city departments to cooperate with state and federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Without her signature, the legislation will go into effect Tuesday.
Prior to her news conference, Councilmen Kevin Carrico, Ron Salem, and Terrance Freeman held a news conference urging Deegan to sign the bill.
