Jacksonville man guilty of murder-for-hire of his wife sentenced to life in prison

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jerry Burns, the man convicted of plotting the murder-for-hire of his wife in 2019, was sentenced to life in prison by a jury on Tuesday.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, the jury voted 10-2 in favor of life in prison.

Burns was found guity of first-degree murder on Friday.

It took the jury 20 minutes to find Burns guilty as charged. Burns is charged with murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit a capital felony.

Burns’ wife, Velvet Burns, was found stabbed to death on the Westside in 2019.

The jury decided Burns and his mistress Amanda Love hired a hit man to make the murder look like burglary.
