‘It’s all new to us’: Clay County students return to the classroom, parents talk school security

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — In Clay County, school is back in session for around 40,000 students. However, for parents and caretakers, safety will always be the top priority – not just today, but for the entire school year.

Kayla and Nelson Speke walked their daughter into school this morning for her first day of kindergarten.

“I was nervous,” Kayla said. “She woke up early. She was super excited.”

When it comes to the school safety measures the district has implemented, here’s what she had to say.

“I think she’s super safe here,” Kayla said.

Nelson agreed.

“Clay County has definitely been on point doing their job,” Nelson said.

Action News Jax also spoke with the Harrelson family, who also dropped their son off at kindergarten.

“I just hope he’s safe today, because you never know,” father Jessie Harrelson said.

In Clay County, students can expect single points of entry in all schools, additional fencing all around, electronic access points to get into the schools and a strong security camera system.

“This is our first go-around ever, so it’s all new to us,” Jessie said.

According to the district’s website, Superintendent David Broskie said: “Student and staff safety continues to remain one of our top priorities. In Clay County District Schools, we take a proactive approach to safety and security through the Clay County District Schools Police Department and collaborative efforts with surrounding law enforcement agencies.”
