LOS ANGELES — The 69th annual Grammy Awards, taking place on Sunday, February 2nd, is one of the world’s most renowned ways of recognizing music and artists for their work throughout the year. But who took home what?

Each year, dozens, if not hundreds, of awards are to be given out. Typically, the Grammys hold a pre-ceremony to the actual broadcast, where a majority of the awards are given out beforehand. This includes categories such as Best Rock Performance, which went to The Beatle’s “Now and Then”, or Charli xcx’s “Brat”, which won the award for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
There were 9 awards given as a part of the main broadcast. Below is a breakdown:
Best Rap Album
Newcomer to the Rap scene, Doechiii, took home the award for her Mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal”. Among the nominees included J.Cole, Future & Metro Boomin, Eminem, and Common & Pete Rock
Best Pop Vocal Performance
Shortly after her performance of the song early in the broadcast, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” took home the award in this category. Nominees included Billie Elish, Beyonce, Charli xcx, and Chappell Roan.
Best New Artist
Staying true to her roots, Chappell Roan took home the award for her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”. Among the nominees included Teddy Swims, Doechii, Raye, Shaboozey, Khruangbin, Sabrina Carpenter, and Benson Boone.
Best Country Album
Her dip into the genre was a clear success as world’s took home the award for “COWBOY CARTER”. Nominees included Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson.
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
“If the world was ending I’d wanna be next to you,” as Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars took home the award for their collab “Die With A Smile”. Nominees included “us.” by Gracie Abrams Featuring Taylor Swift, “LEVII’S JEANS” by Beyoncé Featuring Post Malone, “Guess” by Charli xcx featuring Billie Eilish, and “the boy is mine” by Ariana Grande featuring Brandy & Monica
Best Latin Album
After a 7 year period of releasing music, Shakira brought home the award for her comeback album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran”. Among the nominees included Kali Uchis, Anitta, Kany García, and Luis Fonsi.
Record of the Year
After becoming a viral sensation, it seemed no doubt that Kendrick Lamar would take home the award for “Not Like Us”. Nominees included “Now and Then” by The Beatles, “TEXAS HOLD ”EM" by Beyoncé, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, “360″ by Charli xcx, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish, “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, and “Fortnight” by Taylor Swit featuring Post Malone.
Song of the Year
Shortly after his previous win, the Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Kendrick Lamar returned to the stage to accept the award for “Not Like Us”. Nominees included “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish, “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, “Fortnight” by Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” by Beyoncé, “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter, and “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan.
Album of the Year
Making history and finally taking home the award she sought for years, the First Responders and Firefighters of the Los Angeles County Wildfires presented Beyoncé the award for “COWBOY CARTER”. Contenders for the award included Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, Taylor Swift, Jacob Collier, Sabrina Carpenter, and André 3000.
The Grammys is also a time for celebration and a time for reflection, as The Weeknd made his return to the awards show after years of boycott, the honoring of Alicia Keys with the Global Impact Award, as well as a celebration of the life and legacy of the late Quincy Jones.
