This was part of the Corey Binderim case. He was a contractor, and a jury recommended a life sentence for him last October for killing Susan Mauldin in 2019.

Mauldin hired Binderim to do some work on her Fleming Island home. He didn’t complete the job at her house, and investigators said the 65-year-old wanted her money back.

“Susan Mauldin was a true victim,” said FBI special agent Lauren Regucci. “She didn’t do anything wrong. We felt very strongly that we needed to advocate for her.”

For 10 days straight the FBI Jacksonville, along with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office searched through a Georgia landfill for Mauldin’s remains.

“Once everything gets processed in the landfill it all looks the same,” said special agent Regucci.

Investigators were able to isolate the part of the landfill where Clay County waste was dumped that day.

“The area that was the two days in question was at the corner of the landfill,” said special agent Regucci. “So, we already knew we had two hard edges that we could not go beyond that area, and it would be about a baseball diamond size area.”

On the ninth day of the effort, Mauldin’s skull was found.

Then body parts were found in contractor demo bags.

FBI special agent Bill Logan said searching a landfill was a huge undertaking.

“It took a very specific case, that had a very strong case team and an investigation that happened in a timely way,” said special agent Logan.

And this was the second time the FBI Jacksonville had ever done a landfill search.

The first time was unsuccessful. But that was not the case in this search for Mauldin’s remains in January 2020.

“When we finally started to find some of her remains, its just that overwhelming since of relief,” said special agent Regucci.
