CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Clay County leaders are set to discuss the idea of naming a local road after late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, joining a growing number of Florida municipalities considering similar tributes.
The proposal comes just weeks after Kirk’s assassination, which prompted efforts across the state to memorialize the late political figure.
Last week, Action News Jax reported on a bill filed by Florida State Rep. Kevin Steele, which would rename one street on every state college and university campus after Kirk.
In late September, Lake County commissioners voted unanimously to designate Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway, and now Clay County leaders are weighing a similar move.
So far, officials say no specific street has been chosen for the potential renaming, and that discussion is expected during Tuesday night’s board meeting.
Some residents told Action News Jax they support the idea.
“I think it’s awesome,” Ella Taylor said.
“I love Charlie Kirk and everything he stood for. He has the exact same views as me, and honestly, he’s just done a lot for me and my friend group. We’ve been back in church and everything, it’s just awesome to see what he did with that.”
Others shared similar praise but acknowledged the controversy surrounding Kirk’s political statements.
“He was trying to spread positivity, telling people what God wanted, and I just feel like people were mad at him about his thoughts,” Rod M said. “But that’s just how the world works sometimes… and sometimes he said stuff about race people ain’t like, but it is what it is.”
