38-year-old Julio Marquez is being held at the Columbia County jail without bond.

According to the family’s pastor, Lauren Peterson, was just eight years old when she was killed. The responding officer said she was riding her scooter on U.S. 90 around 6:45 P.M. on Friday.

“People are not watching as carefully as they should especially on 90 because it’s so busy and the traffic is a little crazy,” said Carol Carter, Lake City resident.

Community members in Lake City said this tragedy needs to spark change. They said speeding and reckless driving is out of control on U.S. 90, even though many children live nearby.

Officers said Marquez left the scene unharmed. Unclear how long Lauren Peterson was left before she was taken to the hospital.

Residents said for a driver to hit a child and drive off is inhumane and beyond irresponsible.

Neighbors argue more police patrols are needed on the U.S. 90 Highway.

“They do drive too fast in Lake City on all the roads, especially on U.S. 90. People don’t respect drivers, and they cut into traffic all the time,” said Rodney Cooper, a Lake city resident.
