Large prescribed burns taking place in Clay, St. Johns counties to manage shrub growth

Troopers: Section of US-192 shut down due to smoke from a prescribed burn

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A 73-acre prescribed burn is underway in Clay County and a 69-acre one is happening in St. Johns County.

The Clay County burn is happening at the J.P. Hall Bayard Conservation Area in Green Cove Springs.

It’s on State Road 16 near the St. Johns River and Shands Bridge.

The St. Johns County burn is happening the Guana Wildland Management Area and Dee Dot Ranch.

The St. Johns River Water Management District said in a news release the burn is happening “to reduce hazardous fuel loads and maintain fire-dependent natural communities.”

SJRWMD said prescribed fires are done to prevent wildfires and help “manage the growth of woody shrubs.”

When planning the prescribed fires, “the District ensures that wind and other weather conditions are correct for managing the fire and minimizing the impacts of smoke to residents and traffic.”
