Waycross Mayor Dr. Michael-Angelo James identified the boys as Joey Nelson, 18, and Randall Martin III, 19. Both had been members of the Ware County High School football team, before graduating in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

“Their dedication, sportsmanship, and energetic spirits left an indelible mark on their teammates, coaches, and the entire Waycross community,” said the Mayor. Nelson was also identified as the grandnephew of City Clerk Jacqualine Powell.

Waycross City Manager Ulysses D. Rayford confirmed to Action News Jax’s Alexus Cleavenger that the teens were out fishing at a pond when the lightning hit.

“Let us come together as a community to remember Joey and Randall—not only for their athletic ability but for the laughter and inspiration they brought to all who knew them.“

WCSO says autopsies will be performed by GBI to determine an official cause of death.
