Super Girl Surf Pro competition kicks off days after Tropical Storm Nicole passes through

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — This weekend kicked off the second-largest female surfing event, Super Girl Surf Pro, and while Tropical Storm Nicole is gone, water conditions are still rough.

Strong currents, winds and dangerous debris from Tropical Storm Nicole forced the Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue Division to urge people to stay out of the water.

Tour Manager for World Surf League Brian Robbins says the surfers for Super Girl Surf Pro’s tournament are professional surfers and strong swimmers.

“Were you worried about continuing the tournament? It’s interesting because we love weather with surfing, I mean we need the weather to create the waves,” said Robbins.

Robbins says water safety is always at the fore-front of his mind, which is why organizers are continuously taking advice from lifeguards about water safety. Whether in the water or on land, all beachgoers are advised to proceed with caution after sand dunes eroded and rip currents were disrupted.

The sand dunes and the ocean’s tides weren’t the only thing that took a hit during Tropical Storm Nicole. So did the newly renovated Jax Beach Pier. Tropical Storm Nicole managed to break off a piece of the pier’s walkway.

Super Girl Surf Pro tournament competitor and winner of one of the qualifying series, Erin Brooks, says everyone is just happy to be out in the water.

“Good luck to all of you girls, you guys are all ripping. You inspire me every day and I’m just glad to be with a great group of girls and great waves in Jacksonville,” said Brooks.

Super Girl Surf Pro’s tournament ends tomorrow (Sunday) at the Jax Beach Pier and Seawalk Pavilion where the winners will be announced. First place gets a winner’s cape, trophy and an $8,000 cash prize, while second place gets a $4,000 cash prize.

If you plan on coming, have a great time and remember to stay safe as Jax Beach is still under a red flag advisory.
