Restaurant Report: State inspectors find live and dead roaches at Jacksonville Subway

When you eat out, you might wonder what’s going on in the kitchen. One restaurant was not able to hide anything from inspectors.

Action News Jax’s Ben Becker’s first stop was a restaurant where the outdoor sign says “we make it in front of you what others are hiding.” That restaurant? The Subway on North University Boulevard near Arlington Road.

There, state inspectors found 11 live roaches, 27 dead roaches, and six small flying insects. It was temporarily closed.

The manager told Becker the store was bleached down.

“We took care of all the issues in 48 hours,” said the manager. “I don’t think that’s too bad of a turnaround.”

Elsewhere, Shanghai Nobby’s on Anastasia Boulevard near A1A was cited for 10 rodent droppings, operating with an expired license, and cheese with green mold. It was temporarily closed.

Inspectors say Holy Smoke Barbeque on Edgewood Avenue near Roosevelt Boulevard had 26 live roaches, sewage, and wastewater on the ground, and a time/temperature safety violation. It was temporarily closed.

Becker’s final stop, Charley’s Grilled Subs at the Orange Park Mall, was cited for sewage/ wastewater backing up through floor drains, an ice bin with a buildup of debris, and the current license not displayed. It was temporarily closed.

All the restaurants passed follow-up inspections.
