Jacksonville University adds new exhibit to honor Women’s History Month

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In honor of Women’s History Month, Jacksonville University leaders gathered on Monday to unveil a new exhibit commemorating the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Courtney Barclay, the Associate Dean for JU’s Department of Law, says this exhibit has now found its permanent home at Jacksonville university, after being gifted by the library congress.

“Education like these exhibits provide, really put it out into the community and create a discussion,” Barclay said. “Which is really the whole point of something like Women History Month.”

Now, Barclay says the hope is the exhibit will educate about women’s history beyond the classroom. The exhibit displays photos and text documenting major events during the women’s suffrage movement.

“These kinds of exhibits move us beyond that classroom discussion and allow the students to have more casual conversations,” Barclay explains. “It opens up different kinds of information that you don’t necessarily talk about in the structured classroom discussion.”

One of those students, Catarina Beatris, who says it’s not just about education, but a sign of inclusivity at JU.

“It shows how progressive us as a campus are, especially when it comes to women’s rights,” Beatris says proudly.

Now, the exhibit serves as more than just a temporary event during Women’s History Month, but a permanent reminder of the fight for equality women across the country have endured, and the strength displayed in doing so.
