Jacksonville officer survives shooting, suspect found dead after jump from Dames Point Bridge

Jacksonville, Fl — UPDATE: JSO has identified the suspect as 37-year-old Charlie Brown.

One neighbor told Action News Jax he heard five gunshots late last night.

Another woman said she’s lived in the neighborhood since 1999. When she heard the gunshots, she ran to her bedroom for safety.

Action News Jax also spoke with a neighbor who has lived in area for 3 years

“It’s very quiet, so I would have never expected anything like this to happen in our area,” the neighbor said.

“I just feel like you can never be too safe. This should be a reminder to us all to never take for granted where you are just because you live in a safe neighborhood. Anything could happen at any time,” one neighbor said.

A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer was taken to a local hospital for evaluation following a late night shooting on Old Middleburg Road North near Fouraker Road.

Police say the suspected shooter stole a car, crashed, and then jumped off the Dames Point Bridge. A body has been recovered.

According to JSO, officers initially responded to a burglary in progress just before 11 pm Sunday, when they were ambushed by the suspect who fired multiple rounds.

The officer was hit in the back. Body armor stopped the round. Officers returned fire but the suspect was able to flee in a stolen car. As the suspect drove off, additional shots were fired at police.

The suspect crashed the car southbound on the Dames Point Bridge and then jumped into the river before swimming away. A body was recovered around 3 am today, believed to be the suspect. The man’s name has not been released.

Officers found a firearm on the bed of the river near where the body was recovered. The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

Two JSO officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The officer who was shot was released from the hospital. We are told the officer has severe bruising.

This is a developing story, refresh for updates.

#JSO Chief Brian Kee held a stand-up this morning in reference to an officer involved shooting that occurred on the City’s westside. Upon arriving to a reported Burglary, the two responding officers were ambushed by an armed suspect. One of the two officers was struck by gunfire, but was able to return fire. The suspect was able to flee the area in a vehicle taken during the burglary. He later crashed on the Dames Point Bridge before jumping into the St. John’s River, according to witnesses. The body of the man believed to be responsible for the attempted murder of the officer was recovered from the river several hours later and was pronounced deceased. The Medical Examiner is working to positively identify the suspect and determine the cause of death.
