Family and friends gather to remember 16-year-old shot and killed after birthday party

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On what would’ve been his 17th birthday, loved ones came together for Makye Vogel.

A candlelight vigil held was held in his honor, many wearing his favorite color red and black for sympathy.

The teen was shot and killed after going to a birthday party at an apartment complex in Baymeadows. Police have not released any suspect information in his case.

Emotions were running high for his mother, Heather Moorer.

“My heart bleeds for him,” she said holding back tears. “I never thought I’d be doing a candlelight vigil on my son’s 17th birthday so, how do you feel? There’s not a word to describe it.”

Vogel’s death has devastated his siblings.

“Sometimes, I feel like I failed as the older sibling to keep them safe,” his sister said.

His brother said he had been an incredibly difficult time since his brother’s murder.

“If I had something going on I would talk to him about it...he would always be there for me,” his brother said.

Moorer believes that one day justice will be served and says she will keep pushing for answers.

“Get his memory out there and who he was not what people think he was,” she said. “I’m not going to let him be forgotten he will not be forgotten.”
