Paid parking at Jacksonville Beach city lots begins

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — The last few days of Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day means a busy weekend expected at the beach. Jacksonville Beach is cashing in on those crowds.

“I figured because of Spring Break -- that we needed to get over here early. Otherwise we wouldn’t get a parking spot,” Jackie Waldron said.

Paid parking starts back up Friday at four of the seven city-owned lots. City council could soon vote to add more city-owned lots to the mix. An ordinance goes through council for its second reading Monday.

It would add payment requirements at the following city-owned lots:

• 100 block 6th Ave. N
• 6th Ave N Endzone
• 102 2nd Ave. N

According to the bill, it’s to “provide for uniformity of cost and enforcement of fees and rates charged to the general public.”

Neighbors are split by the decision.

“I come from the westside, so it’s a little better if I could find parking where I don’t have to pay for it — just for gas reason, just because I live far,” Simone Bryant said.

“If I did it every single day I might mind it, but on the weekends and stuff? I think it’s appropriate,” Waldron said.
