Drainage improvement project to begin construction in downtown St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — In an effort to prepare and prevent future flooding in downtown St. Augustine, the Florida Department of Transportation is planning to complete its planned drainage improvement project.

Construction at the intersection of State Road 5A (King Street) and State Road A1A (Avenida Menendez) is scheduled to begin this month.

The project will include replacing and adding drainpipe on King Street near Avenida Menendez and up to the Bay Wall. Improvements under the project will also include:

• Constructing a concrete masonry wall system
• New timber pergola
• Metal and concrete stanchions with guard railing
• Curb and gutter
• Sidewalk upgrades
• Bicycle path
• Lighting
• Asphalt resurfacing and other incidental construction

Along with the planned construction, the Florida Department of Transportation will host an open house for the drainage improvement project.

The open house will take place on Tues., Apr. 18 at the St. Augustine City Hall, City Commission Room, 75 King St. The informal open house will give the public an opportunity to learn about the upcoming project and discuss details with FDOT staff and engineers.

Superior Construction was selected to complete the $4.2 million drainage improvements.

Drivers can expect detours in the immediate area as the project enters its final phases. Completion is expected in late 2023.
