Clay County School Board schedules hearing, move forward policy on which bathrooms students can use

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — On Thursday night, the Clay County School Board voted to move forward and hold a public hearing about which bathrooms students can use.

The policy says that the use of bathrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms will be segregated by, and may only be used by, students of the biological sex they were assigned at birth designated for each specific accommodation.

Some who came out during public comment were for the proposed changes.

“Let boys go in the boys, and let girls go in the girls. If someone wants something different, go to the nurses office,” said one parent.

Others were not so keen on the proposed changes.

“The anti-LGBT policy you will be discussing and possibly approving are not only harmful to LGBT students in school, but the entire community as a whole,” said another parent.

The policy says that students, or their parents, who request an exception or other consideration would be able to use any gender neutral single stall or private accommodation if approved by the school or building administration.

A student spoke out against it, saying its harmful to the LGBTQ community.

“Never in a million years did I imagine where prejudice would be allowed to flourish like it was so long ago,” the student told the board.

The public hearing will be held on Thursday, June 1 at Fleming Island High School.
