Beating inflation: Hacks on finding the best home décor at a fraction of the price

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Decorating can make your place feel like home, but we know it takes time and money to make that happen. With inflation and items on back order, Action News Jax’s Meghan Moriarty, found a few ways to spruce up your home without waiting in limbo or breaking the bank.

Our first tip: Shop second-hand or vintage.

“Every week inventory is different,” said Liz Morgan. She works with Goodwill and helped us pick out some items. She said the best thing about shopping at a secondhand store is that you can take it home the same day. “With a lot of home décor, there’s problems with shipping and availability. When you’re buying secondhand, it’s there for you.”

Our second tip: Pick the larger pieces first, like a mirror wall decor to fill up space.

“Artwork and mirrors — that is something we always have,” said Morgan. “Mirrors are very expensive and this one is $25.”

Morgan adds that you should check out dinnerware at secondhand shops. It likely will be half the price.

Our third tip: Find pieces that are versatile.

For example, glassware can be used in your kitchen or as a centerpiece. It can also be used to store items like pencils or cotton balls in your bathroom.

Our fourth tip: If you prefer to shop online or have your eye on a bigger-ticket item, experts say to shop off-season.

For example, the middle of summer is the best time to buy outdoor furniture, when prices start to get marked down.

Our last tip: Look for fixer-uppers. Moriarty found a $29 rug that just needed a good steaming, but otherwise it was in great condition.
