Arrest made in connection to deadly hit-and-run crash from February, warrant reveals case details

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An arrest has been made in connection to a deadly hit and run in February.

Fifty-one-year-old William Brewer was arrested in late April and now faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and a charge of leaving the scene of the crash involving injury. Mark Curry was killed and his close friend had serious injuries. Curry was being pushed in his wheelchair at the time.

“That was my pops man, that was my ride or die,” Curry’s granddaughter said in February.

“It’s still hitting me, I’m used to him being on the porch every day all day,” she said in February.

Brewer’s arrest warrant says debris, from what they eventually learned to be a black Toyota, was at the scene and believed to be from his car. Witnesses told police that a black four-door sedan was the car that hit Curry and his friend. Several people at a nearby food store also told police they heard the crash and saw a black car turn Westbound on West 45th Street shortly after the crash. The warrant also says there was security video of the crash.

Investigators spoke with him after responding to NAS Jax for a follow-up investigation. The report stated a caller said there was a black Toyota with drive-side front quarter panel damage and a missing driver’s side mirror near one of the buildings. The report says Brewer told investigators he left a boxing class that he was teaching and went down West 33rd Street, and turned right onto Avenue B. The rest of the report is redacted, but investigators told him he hit two people in the road and that the impact of the crash pushed Curry into the other lane of traffic where he was hit by another car. The other driver stayed at the scene.

“We talk about him every day, I cry about him every day,” Curry’s granddaughter said in February.

The warrant said police believe Brewer knew he was involved in a crash, or should have known that the crash happened.

Action News Jax emailed Brewer’s private attorney, who said he didn’t have a comment at this point, but added if there’s something to share in the future he will reach out.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, there have been 2,158 hit-and-run crashes in Duval County so far this year. Three of them have been deadly and 464 left people with injuries.
