15th Annual Fight for Air Climb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Hundreds took part in the American Lung Association’s annual Fight for Air Climb in Downtown Jacksonville.

Participants of all ages climbed to the finish line on the 34th floor of the Bank of America Tower. There were around 45 volunteers. They all had posters in hand and cheered on those who were climbing.

“No matter how fast you are, it’s great just doing it,” said Climber Jack Avery

Firefighters also took on the climb in full gear.

“The air pack weighs about 30 pounds, the coat, pants and boots weigh about another 30-40,” said Firefighter Joel Westerhoff.

Joel made it to the finish line in about 8 minutes, he said while the weight was a challenge, the heat was also a factor.

“With this stuff it retains heat, so a hot environment and then you’re sweating, and your body temperature is just raising, and it just keeps insulating it, so it gets really hot, really quick,” Westerhoff.

He said the physical challenge is what he enjoys most.

For Jack Avery, the climb family is what keeps him coming back every year.

“We are really a very close-knit family; I mean we cheer each other on and we give each other support,” said Avery.

On Saturday, they raised about $130,000 which surpassed their original $120,000 goal.
